Teaching the healing power of food in our diets, and the havoc that can be wrought when we are consuming what our body views as toxic.

I am Jennifer Hummel and a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP). I have worked in allopathic (conventional) healthcare for the last 20+ years supporting medical professionals, patients, pharmaceuticals, etc. Basically, you name it, I have probably dipped a toe in that environment in some capacity! I knew I wanted to be more involved, but I couldn't find an area that really resonated with me and set my soul on fire.
One common question I heard, no matter where I went, was "But WHY is this happening"? Some patients wanted to know what the root cause of their illness instead of taking a pill for the rest of their life. They were willing to make life-style changes! This approach really resonated with me, and my journey into holistic healing began.
My journey really picked up momentum with my daughter. I had been following several holistic minded blogs, to discover that the soy milk I had been giving her was actually an estrogen mimicker. I was shocked that it was being touted as a healthy alternative by media and several practitioners! I found myself angry, the further I dug. So much information was actually contrary to how the body utilizes nutrients and how many nutrients, such as fats, are encouraged to be avoided or eliminated from our diets.
At age 2 my daughter was fully potty trained. She was suffering from a rash that typical diaper cream was alleviating. I knew if I took her to the pediatrician, a prescription strength cream would be prescribed. But I felt strongly in my heart that there was a root cause that needed to be addressed. I took her to a Naturopath. We were barely through the waiting room when the Naturopath declared food allergies. I questioned her because she had not yet even seen the rash. She said that she had other signs that indicated food allergies. After a thorough exam, she stood by her initial assessment. We took her off dairy on Wednesday. By Sunday, her rash was gone, the dark circles under her eyes were gone, runny nose that doctors that had attributed to being in daycare was no longer, cradle cap that she had most of her life resolved, and her ears were cleaner!
This is the power of food in our diets, and the havoc that can be wrought when we are consuming what our body views as toxic.
I graduated from Nutritional Therapy Association in 2014. My vision is to be a bridge, and facilitate communication between the allopathic and holistic communities. I believe both have their place in furthering wellness, and both can compliment each other. I have no doubt that a prescription would have alleviated my daughter's symptoms, and we would have accepted that route had the dietary changes not worked so effectively. Getting to the root cause helped to ensure we would not have to continue managing, but would instead, resolve the issue by addressing the source.
